Netflix 100: The Pursuit of Happyness

As I trolled through the Netflix 100 list, I noted that I’d seen 45 of the 100 movies. Not bad for an armchair critic, huh? I blame my sleepy town, which features movies, classical music, and amateur theatre. Of the three, my husband and I choose movies.

This works to our favor, as I get to recommend a movie to you, or steer you clear of one I wasn’t feeling. If you disagree with me, that’ll work, too. You’ll know which movie you’ll probably love, depending on how much I hated it.

The 4th in my Netflix 100 series, (#7 on the Netflix 100), is The Pursuit of Happyness. (I haven’t seen #6, No Country for Old Men-yet. When I see it; I’m a sucker for a classic, I will double back and review it. I am just that dedicated to you).

The Pursuit of Happyness introduced Jaden Smith to the world. And what a wonderful introduction. I couldn’t take my eyes off his beautiful curly head the whole time he was on the screen. He is definitely there for the cuteness factor, but gets to show a bit of his personality here and there throughout the film.

Based on a true story, The Pursuit of Happyness tells how businessmanChris Gardner worked his way from homeless to Brokerage House.

The action takes place in the early 80s, when the Rubics Cube first burst upon the scene, and the colorful cube even plays an important part in the story. The grit and determination Gardner displays to accomplish his dream is astonishing. Will Smith plays the part with passion and humor. I was literally sitting on the edge of my seat-both times I watched it!

1. Story: The story is very compelling, moving, and unbelievable, while still realistic. 10

2. Acting: Will Smith should have gotten an Oscar for this performance. He is an intern, a salesman, a father, a husband, a dreamer. He plays all these roles brilliantly. 10

3. Costumes/Setting: From the collars to the shoes, this movie screams 80s. In a good way. Set in San Francisco, the city plays one of the most interesting characters. 10

Total Score for the Pursuit of Happyness: 10
