Repo Men: Not to be Confused with Repo Man

I know it’s a stretch, but I thought the new movie, Repo Men, #4 on the Amazon Video on Demand top sellers list this week, was a remake of the 1984 Emilio Estevez movie, Repo Man.

The movie poster should be a big tip-off. Repo Men looks menacing, serious, ominous, even.

Here’s the Repo Man poster:

I’m not sure whether I should take this one seriously or not. The girl with the gun looks a like she’s kidding, and Estevez has a very faux tough pose here.

But, if you haven’t seen both movies, the clincher in the difference between the two is in the description. Neflix describes Repo Men, (2010), like this:

‘In the world of this sci-fi thriller set in the not-too-distant future, artificial organs are readily available to anybody with a credit card. But what happens if a buyer falls delinquent on his payments? Jude Law stars as an organ repo man who’s now fleeing his ex-partner after failing to keep up the payments on his own recently installed ticker. Miguel Sapochnik directs; Forest Whitaker and Liev Schreiber co-star.’

If you’re into sci-fi thrillers, This is your movie! I wonder how it all pans out.

Repo Man (1984), on the other hand, gets this description:

‘Lacking role models and a purpose, baby-faced delinquent Otto (Emilio Estevez) finds a code of honor and a higher calling when he hooks up with a band of contemporary "knights": the repo men. A "seasoned" auto repossessor (Harry Dean Stanton) shows Otto the ropes, and when a big reward is offered for an elusive 1964 Malibu, Otto dodges G-men, cops, religious kooks — you name it — in a frenzied quest for the car. Does his fate lie in its trunk?’

It’s further described as mind-bending, quirky, goofy, and campy. In other words, the OPPOSITE of a sci-fi thriller. You might get nightmares after watching Repo Man, but it would be more like a bad trip than the Tales from the Crypt type nightmares you’d get after watching Jude Law repossess organs in the not too distant future, Forest Whitaker hot on his trail.

So, what do the two movies have in common, besides title? They’re both available for streaming. You can watch Repo Men, the sci-fi action thriller, on Amazon Video on Demand. Repo Man is available on Netflix Instant Queue.

You should watch both, you know, strictly for scientific reasons. Not a Neflix member? Click here.
