Pressure Cook: 5 (almost) guilt-free food shows: #1

As a rule, food shows are evil. I mean, anything that makes you meditate on food and buy more butter is a dangerous combination. But, on the other hand, watching delicious food is not the same as eating it, and these food shows are about more than just the yummy.

Pressure Cook is The Amazing Race meets Iron Chef. New York Chef Ralph Pagano is dropped in the middle of a foreign country for three days. He must earn enough money to get back home, or taste some strange local cuisine. Can he do it? Will we learn something about the local culture and cuisine at the same time?

1. Host/Main Character: I like Ralph Pagano’s thick New York accent and swagger, but the more sensitive viewer might not. He is not warm at all; he is brash. I rate him a 7.

2. Premise:  I love the premise of this show. The ticking clock really adds to the excitement, and you always learn something while watching. 10.

3. Supporting Cast/Contestants: The other people in the show are much more like subjects on a news program than characters on a show. They are often boring. 4.

Total score for Pressure Cook: 7
