Man vs Food: 5 (almost) guilt-free food shows: #2

As a rule, cooking shows are evil. I mean, anything that makes you meditate on food and buy more butter is a nasty (deadly?) combination. But, on the other hand, watching delicious food is not the same as eating it, and these food shows are about more than just the yummy.

Somehow Man vs Food manages to make you hungry, despite various gagging scenarios. It takes special talent to make the viewer alternately salivate and gag. Adam Richman has that special talent. He travels America looking for the best pig-out joints. While he’s not a professional eater, Adam Richman tries as many food contests as possible. He manages to educate us along the way-where to go to try the biggest breakfast burrito, for example. Who said educational TV was boring?

1. Host: Adam Richman combines enough drama with education for a winning combination. A detraction is the close-ups of food dribbling out of the side of his mouth. 8

2. Premise: I’ve seen this kind of of food travelogue before: Feasting on Asphalt, Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, which can be described in a word. BORING. Man vs. Food is anything but boring. 9

3. Supporting cast: In this case, the supporting cast consists of the restaurant owners and a few members of the crowd cheering on the intrepid host as he takes on a mammoth food challenge. Some are shy, but most have personality to complement Richman. 8
